Lake County Melon Crop Nets $1.25 Million This Season
Lake County growers shipped about 2 000 cars of watermelons by rail and truck earning roughly $1,250,000 f.o.b. The season began around May 23 with early prices above $1,500 per car, eased in June, then recovered to fair demand. Cannon Ball led acreage, with Tom Watson's Garrisons and Dude Creeks also contributing. Lake County weather and fertilizer issues affected size, but early melons shipped well, making Lake County the top Florida and leading national early melon producer with about 9,000 acres grown.

Eustis War Hero Honored at Washington Memorial Dedication
The late Lt. Robert Elder Jewell from Eustis is the first local war hero linked to the unfinished Washington Cathedral to be enshrined in the Patriots' Transept memorial. Born Aug. 13, 1917 in Indianapolis, he served as Air Force Navigator with the 570th Bomber Squadron and 390th Group, was shot down Aug. 2, 1944 over France, and posthumously received the Purple Heart. Names of living and fallen servicemen from Florida are invited for inclusion in the memorial.
