Attorney General Richard W. Ervin commended about 105 Lake County voters who urged a second primary to ensure a clear majority for the county judge nomination. They backed Mrs. Katherine Baker who refused to certify Roy Caldwell after a three-candidate May primary, calling the race effectively a first primary due to a resignation. A run-off was threatened if suit filed that day.
At Monday's Lake County Commissioners meeting the board drew both praise and blame for its role in a lawsuit against County Registrar Katharine L. Baker. County attorney Karl Duncan was named to represent Baker and was authorized to hire additional counsel as needed, with the matter continuing on Page 3.
Official 1960 census counts show Eustis at 6 153 residents, up 53.63 percent since 1950. Lake County totals 56 290, Marion 51 361, with Leesburg near Ocala at 13 473 versus Leesburg 2 251.
A state education inspection committee approved two sites for a Lake Sumter Counties junior college. The Eustis ball park lot and a 40 acre tract southeast of Leesburg were selected, with other sites such as the Eustis Gun Club property rejected. Final site choice rests with the Lake County Board of Public Instruction.
A. B. Dean Jr. of Eustis announces L. R. Huffstetler Jr. joins his staff as salesman. Huffstetler, son of a noted Florida citrus man, will specialize in citrus acreage listings from five to fifty acres.
Lake County officials heard that Waterman Memorial Hospital in Eustis risks closing due to heavy financial losses tied to medically indigent patients. Hospital advocate Edwin Mead urged a enhanced county subsidy of 73,533.42 to cover care costs, citing a six month and yearly burden and comparing county spending with similar counties. Mead’s figures show the county currently underfunds indigent care, with private and nonprofit hospitals bearing much of the free care load.
Marianna Cowle, daughter of Mr and Mrs Angus Cowle of Eustis, was named to the Dean's List for high scholar tic achievement at Florida State University last semester.
