Eustis Florida passes a new parking meter ordinance raising penalties for overtime tickets. Violations incur 25 cents within 48 hours, plus 75 cents for mailed notice, totaling $1 if unpaid in seven days. Delinquent cases bring misdemeanor penalties up to $100 or 30 days jail.
The Eustis Business and Professional Women's Club will host a rummage sale on June 23 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Kirkwon Crescent location, featuring assorted items to raise funds for club projects.
Miss Dorothy Jo Osborne daughter of Mr and Mrs J C Osborne has been awarded a scholarship to Bessie Tift College in Forsyth Georgia She recently returned from a trip to Washington D C and New York City with the Umatilla seniors
The Eustis Lake Region News received national recognition in the 1956 National Editorial Association contest. The paper earned first honorable mention in the news story division.
Eustis Police Chief A. J. Groves led a regional police school attended by representatives from the sheriff s department Mount Dora and Leesburg police departments. Florida FBI deputy and Lake Sheriff Willis McCall James Orr Mount Dora Police Chief Fisher and Leesburg officials were among those present.
Eustis Rotarians heard County Judge W Troy Hall Jr discuss the county judge's court roles including probate juvenile ex officio coroner and criminal matters. He cited Florida delinquency at three percent and the nation at four while urging adults to set a good example. Tom Wigelsworth chaired the program.
Proclamation by Mayor Frank W. Stebbins urges all loyal citizens of Eustis Florida to participate in Flag Day observances on Thursday June 14 and to display the American flag in public ceremonies dated June 11 1956.
Four County women are named in Florida Women of Distinction a new book released last week listing Mrs. Sara D Alberson Mrs. Marie Bolles Mrs. Bessie Fischer of Eustis and Miss Emma Die sem of Umatilla The volume compiled and edited by Mrs W J Cozens Jr of New Smyrna Beach marks the first in a planned six volume series for libraries universities and chambers of commerce in Florida.
Richard C. Harden earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Florida at Gainesville on June 4. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Harden of Miami and married to Alice Andrews of Eustis. Harden graduated with honors in electrical engineering.
Judge W. Troy Hall Jr will be main speaker at the Elks Lodge ocasião tonight at 8:30 during the Swim Club day ceremonies. Public invited to attend.
Eustis firefighters responded Saturday at 8:45 p.m. to a fire at a cement block barbecue stand owned by I. S. Thomas. The blaze started from the barbecue pit, caused minor damage, and crews quickly extinguished it. The business is set to reopen this weekend.
The official board and Women’s Society of Christian Service of the First Methodist Church announce a reception for Rev. and Mrs. John Rice and family on Wednesday June 20 from 8 to 9 30 p.m. at the church A general invitation is extended to all residents of Eustis to welcome the new pastor who succeeds Dr. Wayne Patch who moves to St Augustine.
Fred W. Courington son of Mr and Mrs Wilton Courington of Eustis graduated from Bolles School Jacksonville on June 3 He won The Alumni Sabre for outstanding cadet officer and the Quinn R Barton Award for most successful company Commander He also commanded Company C at the Junior School.
The Eustis pool will close to the public Saturday during the county Junior Olympic swim meet starting at 9 a.m. Officials expect the event to end by 2 or 3 p.m., after which the pool will reopen for public use per pool manager Tom Blake.
The Eustis swimming program lists a busy summer schedule including the county Junior Olympic meet and multiple age group meets. Events span June 28-30 in St. Petersburg, July 5 in Eustis, July 13-14 in Tampa, July 19 in Leesburg, July 28-29 in Eustis, August 1-3 in Miami Springs, and August 9-11 for the State Junior Olympic Meet in Daytona Beach.
Weather observer H. J. Dick reports no rainfall in Eustis since May 7. He says the dry spell is likely one of the longest periods without rain in the area's history, noting the absence of an official report but confirming the extended drought.
Eustis Swim Club hosts the county Junior Olympic meet at the municipal pool starting 9 a.m. with Helen Rebel chairing arrangements. About 70 local swimmers are expected, with entries from Leesburg Clermont and Umatilla. District eliminations are July 27-28 in Eustis and the state meet is in Daytona Beach in August.
Miss Martha Walker daughter of Mrs Julia Walker of Eustis has been awarded a 300 honor scholarship to Athens College in Athens Georgia She was valedictorian of Eustis High School Class of 1956 and will begin college work in September.
Two Florida newspaper groups the Florida Press Association and the Rake 3 Daily Newspaper will visit Nassau in the Bahamas for a two day program. A business meeting is planned followed by a tour of New Providence and a reception at Government House hosted by the Earl and Lady Ranfurly. The Emerald Beach Hotel and Jungle Club will host events with local press figures including Marie Bolles Maude Blackburn and Glenn Bolles.
The stop sign at Exeter and Washington will be moved on Monday, per Police Chief A. J. Groves. The bulletin announces the new right of way arrangement at the intersection to improve traffic flow.
