Junior Red Cross Enrollment In Lake County Rises

Mrs. E L. Schumacher, Lake County Red Cross chairman, announced this week that 32 Lake County schools joined the Junior Red Cross this year, up from 20 last year. The program includes 23 elementary schools with 103 rooms and 23 groups in nine high schools, with assistance from Mrs G K Parris, Jim Bevis, and Frank J Banning.

Kiwanis members heard retired Ohio State University educator Dr C C McCracken speak on Vocational Training and Aptitude to the Eustis High School graduation class guests of the club. Bernie Kurland led the Boys and Girls committee for the program during All Kiwanis Week. The International President Dr Charles W Armstrong sent a message, and delegate C Harold Hippler represented the local club in Los Angeles for the International Convention. City Council Examines Plumbers, Trailers and Streets

City Council discussed adopting a new model plumbing code to replace the current one in Eustis. A Center Street through-street amendment was approved. Debate continued on extending liquor services hours, while plans for a city owned trailer park and funded water mains expansion near Woodward Avenue were studied. A. H. Fish Licenses Go on Sale for 1948-49 Season

County Judge Syd Herlong announced that new 1948-49 fishing licenses go on sale next week but will not be valid until July 1. Anglers aged 15 to 65 who fish with rod and reel or outside their home county must have a license, with non residents needing a special license.

Eustis Stores to Close for Florida Watermelon Festival

Real Cooperation Stores In Eustis and business houses will close all day Wednesday June 16 to celebrate the Florida Watermelon Festival in Leesburg. The move follows a Chamber of Commerce decision and an unwritten pact with Leesburg to close on festival days. The Eustis float features citrus farming and seafood motifs with six models and two large fish, built by the local chamber committee.

Bradley Accepts Arcadia Music Director Post

Carlos D. Bradley of Eustis has been offered and accepted a contract as director of instrumental music by Arcadia and its principal. He previously led bands and glee clubs at Eustis High School and taught English. he will return to Ohio after school to write a master's thesis and pursue further study in instrumental music education at Kent State and OSU. His wife and Charlene stay in Eustis with Mrs. Beaton, hospitalized in Cleveland after a fall.

Local Watermelon Brokerage Active in Forty Four States

In Eustis, Bryan Anderson runs a major watermelon brokerage serving forty four states from a brick building on North Bay Street. The Cannonball melons come from 5,500 producing acres across five Central Florida counties with about 3,000 acres in Kaine County producing, packing and shipping. During the season 1,250 cars were sold in twenty five shipping days, peaking at 107 cars in one day. prices and embargoes affected sales, last year’s shippers grossed near a million dollars, with this year’s projected over $500,000 for six weeks.

Naval Reserve Active in Eustis This Summer

The Electronic Warfare Platoon of Eustis plans summer activities under the Seventh Naval District. Members Nat and Eugene Hardin join a two week cruise departing June 20 from Tampa aboard the U S S Olsen to San Juan Puerto Rico. Other members train at NAS Jacksonville. The unit recently received electronic gear and meets Tuesday nights at City Hall.

City Softball Season Opens in 1948

The Eustis softball season began with Palm defeating Igon 9 to 6 on Monday. Bradens beat Midget Grill 24 to 16 on the following night. One seven inning game is played weekly Monday Tuesday and Thursday at the Bay Street Badger Avenue ball field. Four teams Palm Pharmacy Braden's Grocerteria Midget Grill and W M Igon Inc sponsor the league. The season is split into halves with a city championship to follow the finals.
