Florida Greyhound buses return to downtown Eustis

The Florida Greyhound service resumes stopping in front of the Atlantic Coast Line depot on Bay Street after a six week disruption. C J Law and the Eustis City Council approved an exclusive half block parking area and moved ticket facilities to Magnolia and Bay streets, with fourteen buses daily on Orlando to Gulf routes.

Legion Youth plan Eustis Memorial Center construction

At a joint meeting of the building committees of the Legion and Youth in Eustis, Architect Miller was authorized to start plans and a scale model for a combined Legion Memorial and Youth Center. Victor B. Shaner named general chairman of the joint groups. A. H. Ashford and O. M. Grimstad led the discussion on needed accommodations.

Nest of Tropical Bird Found Hidden in Bananas

A well preserved bird nest was found hidden in a stock of bananas at Story Bros. store in Eustis by Vann Reynolds, a member of Eustis High School's graduating class. Bird lovers could not determine the species or former occupants.

A drive to fund improvements for the Eustis District High School football field begins in Eustis and Lake County under General Chairman Igou. The Eustis Rotary club celebrated the birth of Thomas Granville Lightsey at Sylvan Shores with gifts to father J R Lightsey district manager of Florida Telephone Corp. The infant arrived May 7 and a club shower was held at a recent meeting.

Johnston Named Walton County High School Supervisor

John M. Johnston, former principal of Eustis High School, will become supervising principal of Walton County High School in DeFuniak Springs. He will oversee elementary, junior, and senior high work for a 1,200 pupil, 45 teacher system starting July 1. Johnston previously coached in Leesburg and taught government and history. He served Rotary and was an elder at First Presbyterian. wife Mrs Johnston directed church choir. The family plans to move after selling their 623 Washington Avenue home to Harry Clark.

Eustis Teaching Personnel To Show Many Changes Next Year

Eustis schools plan several staffing changes for the coming year with five high school vacancies and two in the elementary. Richard F. Snyder becomes high school principal succeeding John M. Johnston. Thomas Kirkland steps in as coach and physical instructor, replacing J B Culpepper who moves to Jasper. New math teacher Charles B Lind arrives from Linton Indiana and Miss Joan Shaner will teach English and Spanish after earning her degree. Several teachers will depart including Miss Evelyn Connor Gould Sadler and Johnston. Returning high school staff include Chester Crowder Edward Poulin and others. Summer school starts with six weeks of classes.

Allie Bites Man While Working Near Lisbon Gator

B G Laing linesman for Averill and Jett was bitten on the knee by an alligator Tuesday morning while laying a high tension wire near Lisbon. He was taken to Lake County Medical Center Eustis for emergency treatment and walked out after treatment. The gator nest location suggests attack from protecting young.

Old Watchtower Relic Of War Removed From Lakefront Park

The old watchtower in Eustis lakefront park is being dismantled by J. P. Floyd who accepted $25 for the structure. It served as a lookout for aerial observers during the last World War and will be carted away with the premises restored to their former state.

Visiting Officers Urge Civil Service for Florida Police

Chief William Lindsey of St Augustine urged the MuniciPAL Council of Eustis to adopt civil service for regular police and firemen under the 1935 Florida law. He spoke as president of the Peace Officers Association, with H S Redman and Eustis Chief J B Dickerson backing him. A police committee will study the proposal, noting the need for professional training and interagency coordination to retain skilled officers.
