Leesburg Watermelon Festival Named Biggest Local Event

The Leesburg festival showcases the annual Florida Watermelon Festival on June 18 with three Eustis nominees in the town beauty contest. Eustis officials Vogt Pendleton and Savage join locals as early Florida settlers. Entries for watermelon contests are due June 16 to Cohen and Fombly in Okahumpka, with prizes for seven melon varieties and a 600 melon cutting at Rogers Park during lunch.

Cub Reporter Beverly Brown Joins Eustis News Staff

Beverly Brown is named the summer cub reporter for the Eustis News after graduating from Eustis High. She will study journalism at Sullins College next fall and worked on the Panther staff in her senior year. Festivities begin at 10 in the morning with a street parade featuring floats and decorated bikes.

Harold Hippler Heads 40 and 8 at Mt Dora promenade

Harold Hippler Eustis city attorney was elected and installed as Chef de Gare of Lake County Volture 400 of the 40 and 8 society during a Mt. Dora promenade last week. Installing officers of the Grand Voiture of Florida included George Upchurch and Roy Millen. Hippler, Lake County Chamber president, is a WWI veteran and longtime American Legion figure.

Eustis High School Honors 40 Seniors With Diplomas

Graduation exercises in the Eustis High School auditorium marked the end of the year as 40 seniors received diplomas. Guest speaker H. P. Constans of the University of Florida replaced William G. Florida Legislature Raises Legal Ad Rates For Newspapers

The Florida legislature raised minimum legal advertising rates for the first time since 1877 effective May 12. The charge for publishing the first official notice increases from 50 to 70 cents per square inch and subsequent insertions rise from 25 to 40 cents per square inch. The change reflects rising printing costs from 50 to 150 percent since 1940.
