Carpenters engineers and laborers in Tonopah district mines asked a flat $1 daily wage increase in a petition to operators. Operators countered with a 50 cent raise and a sliding scale tied to ten-cent silver price increases. No labor trouble seen. settlement expected soon.
Nevada soldiers drafted into the national army will train at Camp Lewis American Lake Washington in a highly efficient cantonment with excellent barracks and sanitation. The government has funded extensive improvements and the Army Y M C A has built six association buildings and an administration building for soldiers. An experienced staff of secretaries will run the facilities. A separate item mentions the Rexall drug store in Goldfield where a thief named Smiler attempted suicide after being found with morphine and heroin. The wild duck season opens October 1 in the Nevada zone and runs to January 15 under federal and Nevada laws.
Washington announces export licenses for 100 Dutch grain ships are refused. An Holland Belgium cargo split is canceled as the administration prioritizes feeding neutrals and U S needs, with much cargo likely spoiled for human use and repurposed for cattle. Protests from Holland are anticipated over the denial and unloading doubts.
The state reports several drafted men approved by local boards ask to travel to San Francisco at their own expense for final Army physician examination instead of tests at mobilization camp. They hope to secure service by returning to resign jobs if accepted. Adjutant General Sullivan asks the Western Department commander for permission.

A registered youth weighs the draft with a chain of two chance outcomes. He explains that at each stage there are two possibilities, and if any result is grave he keeps two more chances. His quip ends with the belief the government will care for him if crippled or killed.
William BE Wallace resigns from the posts of State labor commissioner and member of the industrial insurance commission to take effect September 1. Robert F. Cole of Sparks is named to succeed him.
