Death of Matthew Hoey Pioneer Businessman

Matthew Hoey, long time Eureka resident and pioneer, died at his Atlas Hill home Monday evening October 25 from stomach trouble and Bright's disease. A native of County Louth Ireland aged 67 years 3 months he immigrated to New York as a boy then moved to California in 1869 and Eureka in 1874 where he ran a blacksmith shop until two years ago. He is survived by his widow and two brothers James and Bernard Hoey of Martines. Funeral held Wednesday at 7 PM from Atlas Hill residence with burial in the Catholic cemetery.

Killing at Mina Ends in Fatal Shooting

In Mina on a Saturday night Grimmet fatally shot Ed Baker after a dispute over gambling money. Baker allegedly pulled a weapon. Grimmet fired, the second shot hitting Baker in the left eye and brain. Authorities say Baker was the aggressor while Grimmet acted in self defense. Grimmet, formerly of Goldfield, had been in Tonopah briefly. Baker was brother to B. F. Baker of the Mina Baker hotel.

Joe Carroll Killed in Elko Night Shooting

Beaker Brewing agent Joseph D. Carroll was shot in the back and killed in Elko by Birdie DeRacey, a 25 year old resident. DeRacey bought an 88 calibre pistol hours earlier claiming fear of coming into town at night. The shooting is described as accidental. Carroll died after bleeding from the mouth and collapsing after walking several dozen feet. Survived by his mother Mrs Dusang of Battle Mountain and his wife and daughter.

Death by Own Action of Charles Karbstein at Carson

Charles Karbstein a former Wherry Creek saloon operator in White Pine County died by his own hand with a revolver in Carson. Despondency over financial reverses is blamed. Born near Hamilton about 30 years ago he had lived in eastern Nevada and worked as a guard at the State penitentiary. He leaves a wife a child a mother in Tonopah and a sister in Idaho. Louisson Exploration Optioned Half Interest in Silveredo Claims
