Sutro Tunnel Milestones and Hardship Details
A correspondent notes ground was broken for the Sutro Tunnel on October 19, 1864, and on July 8, 1878 Adolph Sutro crawled through the Savage shaft connection, first to pass. Sutro introduced power drills in Nevada and achieved 300 feet per month for over two years. Near the Comstock lode the face of the tunnel heated to 114 degrees, workers could not complete three hours of eight-hour shifts. The tunnel runs 20,480 feet from mouth to Savage shaft at 1740 foot level, with 12,826 feet of combined north and south laterals.
