The Kansas City Journal cites beef packer claims of a looming famine and $1 steaks, but argues the end of range cattle and farmer profit will prevent shortages. It says western farmers can raise beef profitably, increasing stock on smaller plots and banishing any famine specter.
The Boston Transcript recalls Old Peterby a rich stingy man whose death would pass wealth to his nephew while a family friend suggests feigning illness to spur happiness. The Wisconsin University now requires a health certificate from graduates seeking teaching certificates to ensure capable instruction.
Government tax provisions require every citizen and resident to file a retroactive return for 1913 covering March 1 to December 31 with exemptions. Rates start at 1 percent on income over 3000, rising to 6 percent above 500000, with deductions for business costs and certain taxes. Returns due March 1, penalties for fraud or late payment. withholding rules apply to those who manage others’ incomes. Also notes teacher incentive to cheerfulness in New Haven and a tongue in cheek Times quip.
