Evans named consul general in London noted

Washington notes report the president sent H. Clay Evans's nomination to the Senate for consul general in London. The president signed the Chinese exclusion bill, and the signing pen was presented to Representative Kahn to carry to San Francisco for display at the Golden Gate Park museum. The Senate agreed to an amendment to the sundry civil bill.

Champion of irrigation reform Newlands highlighted in Congress

The passage honors Mr Newlands as a national irrigation champion in the House for pushing large storage reservoirs and river-diversion works. It covers his birth in Natchez 1848, education at Yale and Columbian Law School, Nevada citizenship, and roles on Banking and Currency Foreign Affairs Ways and Means and Irrigation committees.
