Local Eureka items note Governor John Sparks designated Friday April 15 as Arbor Day. Other notices report illness, court moves, property sales, a school trustee election soon, arrivals from Los Angeles, and varied local business and social happenings in Eureka and neighboring towns.
Correspondence from Eureka County's North End notes Steve Maples of Pine Valley returning Tuesday from a trip to California. Mrs P G Lane left Wednesday for a short visit in San Francisco. Dr W Downey has gone to Boovane to help build the new jail. Mrs Joseph Flynn visited sister Mrs H Rand over Sunday the 20th. Supt G D Abbott of the Eureka Palisade Railway left Monday for San Francisco.
The midweek storm swept the West bringing abundant snow and rain for farms and ranges. Eureka reported about one foot of snow with a low barometer of 9, while wind thunder hail and lightning caused fear and minor impacts. Ely Hamilton Tybo routes suffered delays and heavy drifts forced route changes, with twelve to fifteen inches in some areas and a resumed clear morning signaling the end of the system.
Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday marking Christ’s entry into Jerusalem. Blessing and distribution of palms will occur at the Eureka Catholic Church at 10 o’clock Sunday morning with observances continuing into Good Friday and Easter on April 8.
Terry, long time manager of the Dean ranches in Eureka and Lander Counties, will also oversee the Spencer property in Grass Valley, Lander County recently bought by McKee Brothers of San Francisco. W. A. Brown of Lamoille Valley, Elio County, named foreman of the Spencer ranch, and Dan McDonald in charge of all cattle and horses of the Dean and Spencer ranches.
Clerk Hoegh reports cost and freight for two steel cells for Beowawe jail. Cells weigh 2720 pounds. Freight is 70.80 dollars. Purchases from Pauly Jail Building Company of St. Louis total 184.20 at works, making a grand total of 255 dollars under the commissioners contract.
For the week ending March 25, 1904 ore shipments were made over the Eureka and Palisade Railway from Mine Pounda of Ore totaling 43435, 94900 and 36120 pounds.
Grand Chancellor of the Knights of Pythias in Nevada will be in Eureka next week to offici ally visit Beatifie Lodge No. 7. A special meeting is planned Friday evening April 1 and all members in good standing and visiting brethren are urged to attend.
The Adams-Booth Company of Sacramento California seeks information from County Clerk Hoegh about Henry Hansche born Brunfels Germany about 60 years old who lived in Nevada about five years and is an heir to a small German estate.
The latest metal quotations list silver at New York 55 cents per ounce. Lead stands at New York four dollars per ounce and at Salt Lake City three dollars fifty cents. Copper at Salt Lake City is listed as Lucents.
Gustave A Mau, age 71, died by hanging in the Eureka wood shed after long illness and rheumatism. A coroner's inquest returned a verdict consistent with suicide. He left a German note bidding his family farewell. Funeral services were held at his home and grave with Rev. J. E. Johnston presiding. He left a widow and eight children in California and Nevada, with relatives in Oakland Santa Maria Ely and Eureka.
Mrs Bridget McCarty died in Eureka on March 28 1904 at Ed McCormick’s home on South Main Street. At ninety six she was said to be the oldest Nevada resident and had never needed a physician. She had been bedridden for fourteen weeks before passing peacefully. A native of County Mayo Ireland she raised Ed McCormick and had long lived with him. Funeral services were held Friday at Ed McCormick’s home and Catholic Church with Rev Father Manion officiating, burial at Catholic cemetery.
William Moore, aged 85, died March 19 at his daughter Mrs. T J Bell’s home in Reese River Lander County Nevada. He previously resided in Eureka and leaves five children Mrs Bell Mrs Hyke and Eldred of Klondike Nye County W A I Moore of Newark Valley White Pine County and Walter of Tonopah Nye County. Smallpox reappears in Elko with one Woods family case and a high school student son of W S Griswold of Ruby Valley. premises quarantined.
A Churchill County grand jury issued a true bill against Tete Frienzi last week. He was arrested in January on charges of stealing $5 and other items from Budd Williams’ home. Trial is set for April 25. Frienzi formerly resided in Eureka.
A thirty foot snow slide near Truckee delayed the Western Pacific freight train and buried its two engines for four hours. Rail men escaped injury after being trapped under tons of snow. no Western mail reached Eureka on Thursday.
Two Indians are reported to have smallpox at Eugene Locke's ranch in the Troy mining district of southeastern Nye County. A number more are said to be down with the same disease at Reveille, 140 miles south of Eureka, in Nye County.

J.8. Flemming of Salt Lake City and A.Redding of Tyba Mining Company will spend a month at White Pine Copper Company's Ruth mine. They will conduct analytical and experimental tests on ore concentration chlorination and mellow treatment to assess process feasibility for a small experimental plant next summer. The White Pine Company is praised for prudent mine management and determining heat requirements before building a large facility.

Late reports show Goldfield Diamondfield and Columbia in the new district advancing despite lumber shortages. Three water flows have been found at Rye Grass Tognoni Willow springs, with a Tognoni station nine miles north of Diamondfield. Thomp son’s stage now runs from Goldfield to Tonopah via Diamondfield, shortening the road by two miles. Abe Summerfield received five years for grand larceny in Hawthorne, after stealing a trunk from a Chinaman containing opium and gold.

In United States Circuit Court at Carson on March 31 Judge Hawley found in Eisele against Oddie and others, awarding $600 damages and costs after Eisele was ejected from Tonopah land by prominent locals. Eisele sought $5000 for indignities and property loss. Carson Hotel passes to W W McMillan who plans to run it while considering purchase. illness prompted retirement.
