Old Jumbo causes new trouble in Eureka as Newel mishandles iron
The Eureka Consolidated Jumbo pumping plant on Ruby Hill was scrapped for iron and hauled to the Eureka & Palisade depot for shipment to Sacramento. Contractor Newel oversaw the work, signed wage bills, and then disappeared. Sacramento Pipe Works denounces Newel to creditors, while contractor Sire awaits payment. About twenty-five tons of broken iron remain on the Hill, with possibly a hundred more untouched, signaling likely losses from mismanagement. Sacramento Pipe Works may send a representative to adjust matters.
