Belmont Mine Disaster Rips Tonopah Region
The Tonopah Belmont mine suffered a severe fire on the 1166 foot level that trapped and killed miners. Rescue efforts recovered 16 bodies by Friday with 11 identified among them, including William Murphy, praised as a hero for guiding cage loads to surface. The disaster prompted extensive signaling of sympathy from officials and support from nearby mines.
