Death in Eureka County Reveals John T. Bakers Exposure
The Elko Independent reports John T. Baker found dead on February 19 in Harrison's Pass Eureka County. Baker and Thomas of Ruby Valley left Judge Toyne's Moand Valley home to ride to Ruby Valley. Baker, after drinking, likely died from exposure. Thomas rode ahead, leaving him behind. Baker's body was brought to Elko February 2 by Short and Strozzi, found by George Kennedy near a road and creek. A whisky bottle and mule indicate a desperate struggle to reach the bank. The funeral was held at the Presbyterian Church, Rev. Greenfield officiating. Baker, a Wisconsin import who settled in Eureka in the 1870s, was a noted lawyer and wit, creator of the Damphool Infirmary, and known for humor and public reports.
