Keene’s Wall Street Legend Then and Now
Vivid sketch of James R. Keene once king of speculation. The piece recalls his start in San Francisco bonanzas, the 1877 market comeback, a failed Chicago wheat corner, and his role in United States Steel’s 1901 flotation. It notes a 1000 share Northern Pacific scare and his enduring exile to luxury hotels while clinging to Wall Street dreams.

Keene’s Fortune Shrinks After Stock Market Losses
Mr. Keene, once worth as much as 20 million, saw large portions vanish in Southern Pacific and Talbert Taylor failures. Now valued between 10 and 15 million, he has largely withdrawn from active investing after Europe and a major surgery. He stays at the Waldorf Astoria, rarely leaving his apartment, attended by doctors and nurses.
