Irrigation bids opened for Truckee River project in Nevada

The Interior Department opened bids on July 15 for thirty miles of canals and tunnels to convey water from the Truckee River to irrigable lands in the Truckee and Carson Valleys. Bids ranged from $809,849 for division four by the Mahoney Brothers to $1,161,944 by E. B. & A. L. Stone Co. The project calls for removing 2.25 million yards of earth and 250,000 yards of rock, with three tunnels totaling 2,800 feet. The ditch spans 31 miles with initial 1,400 cu ft per second capacity, later 1,200 cu ft per second, starting near Wadsworth and reaching a large reservoir in Churchill county.

New Coast Railroad Aims For 1600 Mile Route From KC

George Crocker of San Francisco is re elected director and vice president of the Kansas City Mexico and Orient Railroad Company. The project plans a 1600 mile direct line from Kansas City to Topolobampo, Gulf of California, with funds reportedly subscribed. The line will be 500 miles shorter than existing routes, backed by the Stilwell Syndicate, and linked to telegraph and express contracts with Western Union and American Express. A Hamburg America steam service will connect Topolobampo and Hongkong once the road is finished.

Mrs. Harriet Blaine Dies in Augusta at 76

Mrs. James G. Blaine died in Augusta Maine on July 15 at age 76. Her maiden name was Harriet Stanwood daughter of a Maine leader. She and her husband met as teachers in Kentucky. they wed at Pittsburg. Mr. Blaine later edited the Kennebec Journal. She leaves a son James G. Blaine and two daughters Mrs. Harriet Beale and Mrs. Walter Damrosch of New York who were at her bedside.

Special Agent Max Pracht of the U S Land Office says the government will not permit dropping the contest over Las Animas coal lands. Land proved as coal must be paid for at $20 an acre. Hog raisers mix lime and salt to build pigs bones

A fragmented Arkansas Bulletin recipe describes a hog feed mixture of charcoal one and a half bushels salt four pounds hardwood ashes ten pounds stacked lime four pounds plus water shade in summer and grain when on grass and a dry dust-free bed in winter. It notes pigs will eagerly consume the mixture and stresses ample confinement space to avoid filth. Separately Jacob Eppinger, once head of a bankrupt grain brokerage, has been indicted by a San Francisco Grand Jury for obtaining money by false pretenses. a second brother Herman is widely expected to be indicted. An advertisement from Haynes Parker & Co promotes Chamberlain’s Cough Remedy, claiming cure after six months of coughing, with local sale by Mrs. H. M. Schneiders & Co.
