Ore near the 400 foot level shows high grade mineralization along the contact of limestone and shale. The Ponanza winze bottomed 150 feet below the 400 level, a drift will extend to the contact with hope of similar ore. A shipment yielded $32 per ton with cyanid ing tests favorable.
Carload shipments of ore and spells to Utah smelters sent this week. Three cars by Eureka Crassus. Three cars by Eureka Holly. Twelve cars spells by Richmond Eureka.
Mrs. R H Richardson wife of Dr R H Richardson superintendent of the Nevada State Asylum collapsed and died while dancing at Armory hall during a public reception for state legislators. Her husband witnessed the sudden heart attack and the tragedy cast gloom over Carson City where both were well known.
Special dispatch reports a sensational week for Eureka stocks with Eureka Crowns rising to 1 in San Francisco and 1.20 in New York amid large short interest. Burcke Hally hits 2, Bullwhacker up to .67, signaling heavy local accumulation and potential broker troubles as the Eureka district stock rally continues.
The Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco begins exchanging Permanent 44% Coupon Bonds of the Fourth Liberty Loan for Temporary Coupon Bonds issued in that loan. The Rescue Hall Association leased its new pavilion in Eureka to Ray Swick for one year. Swick plans for general public use and has arranged with the Eureka County Board of Education for the High School to use the hall five afternoons weekly for gymnasium exercises.
Miss Campiglia state supervisor of home economics met Eureka County Board of Education and Principal Hunting to discuss adding a home economics course at Eureka High School. If student interest and scheduling align, the course could begin next Monday.
White Pine County Commissioners instruct District Attorney to sue Idaho Nevada Sheep Company to recover taxes and grazing licenses on about 14 000 head of sheep near Tippett held by the sheriff. The band carries a December tax receipt from Elko County and is claimed as Idaho sheep grazing illegally in White Pine County at 15 cents per head.
The Eureka-Hamilton Mines Company of Hamilton Nevada paid $60 000 in full settlement to R G Ward owner on Saturday at 370 Bush Street San Francisco to clear encumbrances and speed financing. The deal frees property for a mining campaign and new equipment will be installed with plans for a mill.
Dr. Childs Mantor died after an operation on January 17 at Lane Hospital in San Francisco. He had practiced in Eureka after moving from Tobar and had been ill after influenza. Born in Sheldon, he lived in Utah and Nevada before settling in Elko. Survived by daughters Eisie Mantor and Ella Gordon and son Herbert C. Mantor.
The eighth grade boys spent Friday afternoons building a bookcase for the new set of Book of Knowledge for upper grades. The project was completed successfully with no supervision, and honors go to Mrs. MacGillivray's room for best attendance this past month.
Washington January 27 the Department of Agriculture announced a relief measure deferring cattle grazing fee payments on public lands until August 1 due to weak industry conditions. Location certificates and mining location blanks are available at this office.

A Eureka letter reports the death of Mrs. Vincent Lani at her daughter Mrs. James Romano’s home in Oakland California on Friday January 21. Born in Credo Italy she was 72 years 10 months and 2 days old and had lived in Eureka since 1878. She is survived by her husband two daughters Mrs James Romano of Oakland and Mrs F A King of Jerome Arizona and two sons Ulysses Lant of Elko and Seravbine Lant of Topopah Nevada. The funeral was held Monday January 24 at St Leo’s Catholic Church with interment in St Mary’s cemetery Oakland.
The Nevada Historical Society issued Volume I covering 1917 to 1920. The Sentinel received a copy featuring editor foreword and pieces such as Recollections of an Active Life by Geo EB Peckham, Christmas Eve poem by Edwin Comerford, Trappers and Explorers of the Great Basin by F N Fletcher, The Cow and the Rose poem by Sam P Davis, and fourteen memorial papers including Samuel Post Davis and Sam C Dunham’s appreciation. It reproduces years of deceased members and includes old photographs and drawings.
An elderly trapper James Dollard about forty miles from Wells was found dead in his cabin by a mail carrier on Sunday. He had been shot four times and there is no clue to the murderer. Police suspect robbery as the motive due to the small money found on the premises.
Nevada Internal Revenue Collector Kelly disputes Reno Mayor Stewart's criticism of federal enforcement. He asserts officers uphold both U S and Nevada laws, urges support for prohibition, and cites federal inspections and tax collection as necessary to curb illicit alcohol and soft drink fraud.
