Rescue worker Charles Armstrong Dies After Pneumonia Illness
Charles Armstrong a 45 year old worker from the Alpha shaft Giroux mines near Ely died Wednesday night in Ely less than 24 hours after illness onset during rescue efforts for trapped miners. Armstrong, who joined the mining force as a youth, had been assisting in the rescue when pneumonia struck, and he died the following day.

Severe Winter Storm Hits Eureka Area
Severe gale dubbed Old Boreas swept Eureka and nearby Thursday night leaving little snow on the ground as winds howled. By Friday morning a snowstorm began, dumping about eight inches, then clearing partially Friday night and turning cold Saturday. Barometer indicated continued storm zone into Saturday night.

McElroy, son of Mrs. Mary McElroy and former Eureka resident, has been promoted to commissary for the Southern Pacific Railway with full charge of supplying railroad camps near Seattle. A Salt Lake and Eastern group reportedly acquired the Little Gem and Regulus mines at Tenabo in Ballion district Lander County. The Battle Mountain dispatch of January 20 says the Gem at Tenabo was sold for a large sum, with work to resume on a large scale. J J Cusick, Major Gillet, Hiram Tyree and others are connected to the deal. The Regulus group owned by A Rothchild is included. A mill is planned to handle custom ores on site, boosting local profitability by avoiding high freight and treatment charges. The Gem Company will continue sinking the main shaft to 1500 feet.

Death of M L Riordan Pioneer Rancher of Nye County
The Ely Expositor announces the death of M L Riordan of Lower White River Nye County in San Francisco on January 15 after a long illness. A pioneer in White Pine and Nye Counties, he was a large cattle owner and widely known. Survived by wife and twelve children, seven sons and five daughters, all grown. He was 72.

Overstocked Utah coal industry plans shutdown
The Utah Fuel Company and other Utah coal firms face a rare oversupply as mines close and prepare for unprecedented conditions.
