Death of Jacob Shallenbarger Pioneer of Eastern Nevada
The Ely Expositor reports Jacob Shallenbarger died in Los Angeles on January 6. His body will be brought to Ely for burial with family. Born December 4, 1839, in Connellsville Pennsylvania, he moved to Nevada in 1862, freighting on the Comstock, later ranching near Ely, and prospering in water rights and property deals in Ely and Los Angeles. He is survived by his widow, son Marion C. Shallenbarger, and daughter Christie.

The Farmer and Stockman reports many cattle and horse deaths across the southwest from feeding late cut alfalfa. Rain halted curing, leaving heavy sap moist hay that compromises animal health. Frozen alfalfa is another deadly risk, especially for horses and cattle, while hogs can tolerate it.
Foreign Corporations Must Publish Reports in Nevada
State law requires all foreign corporations doing business in Nevada to publish a yearly financial statement in a Nevada newspaper by March, starting 1914.
