The National Defense Act era regulations authorize drafting unorganized militia if reservists and volunteers fall short. Any able bodied U.S. citizen may be drafted by the President to maintain reserve battalions at prescribed strength, turning a nominal militia into compulsory service.
Judge Frank H. Norcross retiring chief justice will open a law office in Reno. The report notes an average daily copper ore shipment of 150 tons from Battle Mountain and nearby camps. Five applicants sat for the bar exam. four men and one woman, Lydia H. McMullen of Reno, admitted. Two boys injured in a coasting accident at Jarbidge. one fatally, others seriously hurt. George Wingfield plans a modern 80 room hotel opposite Fallon courthouse with Churchill County Bank housed in the building, to begin next Spring. The Supreme Court upheld void mortgage by husband in First National Bank of Ely versus Meyers, remanding for a new trial. rehearing granted. Chief Justice McCarran authored the opinion. Justice Coleman filed a dissent.
Mr Trimble, Clerk of the U S House, projects the November House at 215 Democrats and 215 Republicans with five independents. A New Jersey contest could tilt to Democrats, else the chamber would be 216 Republicans and 214 Democrats.
Announcement from Washington confirms the Western region farm loan bank will be based in Berkeley California. The district includes California Nevada Utah and Arizona.
President Wilson signed the Ferris bill opening 640 homesteads for stock raising and grazing. The measure targets western states and Alaska, raising the homestead unit from 320 to 640 acres on arid lands with required improvements of 1.25 dollars per acre.
