Southern Pacific plans cut off new Nevada line to Elko
Readers in Carson City report Southern Pacific may build nearly ten miles of new trackage in Nevada to connect Los Angeles directly with its main line at Elko. The route would branch from Mojave to Benton, skirt the White mountains, pass Hawthorne, Mina, and Diamond Valley, then north to Elko, bypassing 115 miles via Eureka to Palisade. The plan aims to intertwine with the E and P road at Palisade, possibly broad gauging the E P line and easing Eureka district ore shipments. If completed, Eureka residents expect lower freight rates and improved supplies from a four to five mile spur connecting to the main SP line.
