Assassination of Portugal King and Crown Prince in Lisbon
King Carlos I and Crown Prince Luiz were killed in an open carriage attack in Lisbon while returning from Villa Vicosa on February 1. Queen Amelie shielded the princes, Manuel was wounded, and six assailants were involved. The regicides were said to include Manuel Bulea, with three other conspirators captured or killed. A new regime emerged in Lisbon within days as Premier Franco resigned and Rear Admiral De Amaral formed a liberal cabinet.
