Test Spring Valley For Artesian Water
The county will not continue artesian water tests in White River valley after drilling 1300 feet with no results. Equipment removed and churn drill being repaired at Copper Flat. A possible future test may occur in Springley if residents donate 40 acres. land returned if unsuccessful. State will reimburse county about $5000 spent.

Bananas Thought to Kill Elko Boy Died After Frosted Transit
Robert Biddle a 14 year old boy of Elko died at his home Sunday morning after two days of illness from eating bananas not in proper state for food. Authorities suspect the fruit deteriorated from frost in transit.

Prohibition Question Aims For 1918 Ballot In State
Reports from the western part of the state show petitions for a prohibition measure gathered seven to eight thousand signatures. Legally about 3300 were needed to trigger a statewide vote, and the effort has more than doubled that figure. If the Legislature does not act the measure will go to voters in 1918. The drive was largely voluntary with little organized funding. Prohibition is seen as the leading issue for the state two years away.
Elko Cattle Stealing Case Skilled Jury Deadlocks
In Elko the jury in the Dave Moore cattle theft trial deadlocked after two days of deliberation. Ten jurors favored conviction and two favored acquittal. Prosecutors argued Moore planned to dress the heifer for beef after partial skinning and later claimed he shot it to protect his son from a rabid animal.

Woman elector runs 4 bi Colorado farm manage 1280 acres
Mrs. Gertrude Lee, Colorado’s first woman elector and former Democratic State Central Committee chair, now runs a 1280 acre farm in Denver with 60 head of stock and 200 acres of wheat. She oversees farm hands and daily chores while her husband serves with Colorado troops on the Mexican border. She plans to spend the rest of her life on the farm and says her hobby is Sudan grass.

PUMPING FOR IRRIGATION PROVES PROFITABLE IN REGION
Ely Record reports rancher George Terry near Lund tested sub surface water pumping last summer and found it economical and profitable. A small plant sunk water from 12 to 15 feet below ground, yielding crops on reclaimed land. Terry expects his setup to irrigate about 60 acres and encourages others to adopt underground water pumping to reclaim more land.

Beowawe Track Walker Killed by Train
A Western Pacific track walker named Michael Donnelly was killed near Beowawe last week. Donnelly was patrolling Extra 84 when struck by the train operated by engineer Haggbloom and conductor Beem. The body was badly mangled. the engineer blew the whistle but Donnelly did not hear it.

The Post Office Department grants motion picture films mail status effective January 1. They will use regular parcel post rates but must be packed outside mail bags in spark proof metal cases with warnings to keep fire and lights away. Film companies had long sought postal admission.
