Eureka Fire Stays Blazes in Main Street Rear
A fire broke out behind Phil Paroni's store on Main Street near the Eureka Opera House around 11 30 p m Wednesday night. Fire crews from Rescues Nob Hill and Knickerbocker quickly fought four hose lines to contain the blaze and saved most of the block with only the back wall charred. The incident recalls Eureka's 1880 blaze at Mrs. Poplin's store, which destroyed about half the town and 300 houses, but the recent effort stopped the fire from spreading westward along Main Street. The origin remains unknown.
