Railroads May Ruin Northwest Milling Industry

The Portland Journal reports that car shortages and a proposed freight rate hike to East of the Rockies are forcing Willamette Valley and Southwestern Washington mills to close. Dozens of mills along Southern Pacific and Northern Pacific lines have discharged workers as orders are canceled and deliveries missed. Leading figures claim railroads withholding cars and delaying shipments worsens an already dire situation, with Lebanon Cottage Grove and Dorena mills idling and several others considering shutdowns. Washington mills from Centralia to Tenino report major reductions, while Portland producers see prices dip amid the crisis.
