London reports diplomatic circles confident a war between China and Japan will be avoided. Dispatches indicate cooperation between the two nations. A separate note says the Japanese Russian dispute was referred to the Czar with a call for Hague arbitration, but the military party overruled him.
Five mutineers faced trial before U S army authorities in Leavenworth Kansas with tight security after a November mutiny at the military prison. One guard died and twenty seven prisoners fled before being recaptured. ringleaders now confront possible life terms.

A Chicago divorce suit was filed by Harriet Mellroy against Frank Mellroy. In Salt Lake City on a brisk October morning, officers cranked up a manhunt for escaped condemned prisoner Lynch and an ex convict named Douglas. Both men are armed and prepared to fight. Lynch suffered a broken right arm from a prior bullet wound during the escape. Warden Wright vows Lynch will be captured dead or alive before night.
Indianapolis on October 10 reports the Structural Building Trades unions meeting to form a national body chose Frank Buchanan as president. Operators balk at a 25 percent raise demand from hoisting engineers, offering half. If operators persist, coal mines statewide could be tied up.
Vienna reports Turkish battalion crossed the Bulgarian frontier yesterday and routed Bulgarian forces at a weak point near Drama. Two Bulgarian companies from Dubnitea engaged the Turks and forced them to retire.

In Hamilton on October 14, about seventy five masked men stormed the jail, overpowered the jailer, and hanged Walter Johnson from an electric light pole for the murder of six year old Fennoie Buck. The boy’s body was severely mutilated and Johnson pleaded for mercy before the hanging.

The funeral for Rev N B Alley who died yesterday was held at his West Eighth Street residence at 2 50 PM. Burial followed at the I O O F Cemetery with Rev David Errett of Salem officiating. Pallbearers included Hon J H Shape Roseburg Hon T G Hendricks Hon A C Jennings Mat Perkerson J T Donaldson and Tom Brown.
In Kansas City Missouri today an accidental fire gutted nearly the entire Missouri estate fruit exhibit for the St. Louis Fair. Authorities reported the blaze caused extensive damage with losses running high and no injuries immediately recorded.
Ogden October 1 The Southern Pacific track across the upper arm of the Great Salt Lake sank seven feet after a rock train passed this morning. About seven miles of the completed trestle, built at a cost of millions, is now irregular and blocked until it can be leveled. The structure was to be inspected by the Board of Directors for acceptance next month.
