Dr. Cook arrived in Buffalo and challenged Peary's polar narrative. He said living witnesses could disprove distorted conclusions and offered to bring them before an impartial inquiry with interpreters. He declined to enter a newspaper controversy and spoke at the Chamber of Commerce.
Austin dispatch reports an express train on the Houston and Central crashed into a burning bridge near McNeil. Four men died and a wrecking crew was dispatched to the scene. W. L. Wallace of Creswell and J. M. Wallace of Cottage Grove were in the city overnight.
The top Eugene price for hops today was 26 cents per pound, paid by J A Manrer for 26 bales to James Hinton of the city. The buyer, a jeweler, purchased as a speculation, predicting prices may double before market close. Reports indicate gains elsewhere with Woodburn at 26 1/2 and Salem at 25 cents.
Salt Lake, Oct. 13. The Oregon Short Line Railroad today elected directors. The old board was reelected with the exception of F. W. Crosby who was elected to succeed the late E. H. Harriman. J. Sanders of Wendling spent last night in the city.
W. W. Haines returned from Harney county noting rapid settlement of cattle ranches into grain farms. He saw oats up to 49 bushels per acre and strong yields for wheat rye and barley on unirrigated ground cleared of sagebrush. Haines, a county fair judge, expects irrigation will soon expand and transform the region into a garden spot.
C E Roberts of Grants Pass visited Brownsville this week to find a residence for about forty horses tied to freighting on the Natron extension of the Southern Pacific. He sought a place to keep idle stock with available feed but did not find suitable accommodations.
