George and L. P. Stanley have opened their new store in the Chrisman block and are now ready for business. The firm carries nations, dry goods, stationery, furnishings, etc. A. M. Hendricks, who broke his ankle at Campbell Walker's hop yard, had a second bone set yesterday and is progressing well.
The Portland plumbers on strike for six weeks returned to work. They sought a raise from 4.50 to 5.00 dollars per day, a demand many in the public oppose, arguing the existing scale was adequate. The dispute was hotly contested.
W. F. Thomas, alias Kid Smith, killer of Policeman Shavneman, died in Seattle hospital after an emergency operation. He had been in bad shape and refused to reveal his two accomplices, and he never confessed to the crime.
The Czar arrived in Vienna and, with Franz Joseph, is consulting on Balkan affairs. There is no longer danger of trouble with the socialists and Bulgarian matters remain as they were yesterday.
Prof Glenn delivered a vocal solo at the University assembly and declined an encore. President Campbell spoke on leadership preparation, arguing education uplifts work and leadership, stressing intellect artistic sense and character development. The second team game with the High School was postponed to Oct 10, with a potential O A C second-team match at Corvallis.
Dr D A Paine retires from active practice in Eugene to pursue business in Portland. He will be secretary treasurer of Northwest Electric Company and remain connected to Eugene via ongoing interests. Dr Paine has held roles in state institutions and local firms, with his family planning to move to Portland in coming months. Dr Wm Koykendall will continue the practice.
The refaced Church of Christ in Springfield Oregon will be rededicated next Sunday October 4 at 11 a m. W H Sanders and Mrs Nellie Wallace married at the home of the bride's parents in Natron on September 2 1903 in a quiet ceremony with only close relatives present. A splendid banquet followed the service for all guests.
A telegram from Eugene reports the death of Mary P. Van Duyn aged 72, mother of C. R. B. Van Duyn and Mrs. 4. C. Jennings of Eugene. She died in Bloomfield Iowa after weeks with her daughter, and the note mentions John C. Whiteaker of Eugene clerking in Miller's drug store. The deceased was the grandmother of the late ex Governor Whiteaker.
Lane County tobacco left at the Guard office by 8 J. Cox and BR E Williams at Cedar Flat. The plant is very luxuriant over four feet tall with leaves ten to twelve inches wide. It is white Burley variety intended for exhibition at the district fair.
Joseph McElbiney of Linten, Jows attests to selling many bottles, praising Chamberlain’s Cough Remedy for coughs and colds. He asserts quick relief and promises it is a good friend when troubled, recommending Defoe’s Drug Store for purchasing.
Racing at Bangs Park opens amid large crowds and steady excitement as a full speed program unfolds. Notable performances include Lord Kitchener leading in the opening trot, Mt Pete and Sunday Mac close behind in the half mile, Gad winning a five eighths mile event, and King Joe taking the quarter mile dash amid a lively afternoon of racing action.
From Silver Lake J M Small renewed his subscription to the Weekly Guard during a pleasant call. He says he subscribes to many papers and regards the Guard as the best weekly paper in the state. He has kept the Guard for twenty years and recently brought horses to the valley to sell before returning home. He notes Lake county sage brush areas are being turned into tillable land and that expectations for the land’s value have changed.
Joe Goldbrick of Colosa California describes 15 years of excruciating rheumatic pain ending after trying Electric Bitters. He says the tonic cured liver kidney trouble and general debility, promising 30 cents with satisfaction guaranteed by W L DeLano, druggist.
County Clerk Lee issued two marriage licenses this month, matching last September and far below last month. Names include John M. Gibson with Metha Nelson, Coustave Jansen with Hattie L. Nye, and many other couples listed with dates in September.
Local military companies underwent first inspection and muster under the new militia law. Co C was inspected by Captain J M Williams and Co A by Captain Meammonad. Soldiers appeared in good trim with Krag Jorgensen rifles. A Military Club ball followed Co A’s inspection, featuring Eugene Mandolin Club and lively dancing.

Jobo Hooker of Panther and owner in the Hooker Brothers shingle mill says in Eugene they plan to rebuild the mill this winter after it was burned to the ground recently.
Norbert Beadle, logger, sues Dre Paine and Kuykendall in circuit court for 21000 damage saying a May 1903 arm fracture was negligently treated at Eugene Lugene hospital. He alleges bone missetting left arm crooked and useless, with extended hospital stay and ongoing pain. Paine defends unexpected suit as a thunderbolt and notes he invited Beadle to check the arm without response.
