Collision of the Dix Steamer Sinks Dawn Rescue Efforts
The steamer Dix bound for Port Blakeley collided with the steamer Jeanne off Duwamish Head in Seattle harbor. Forty two Dix passengers were lost and 37 saved. Captain Lermond faced blame from survivors. The Jeannie rescued many as it aided in a three hour search with lifeboats and a searchlight. Eighty aboard Dix, many perished on the lower deck. Bodies were scarce as tides carried remains away. Port Blakeley officials and numerous named residents are cited in casualty lists.
