Senate fixes lumber duty at one dollar by decisive vote
Washington June 23 The Senate voted down an amendment proposing a $1 per 1000 feet lumber duty by a 44 to 24 margin. The chamber sustained the finance committee schedule of $1.50 per 1000 feet, indicating strong protectionist sentiment and little chance to change rates in conference. Only ten Democrats joined the affirmative. The Senate adopted the finance committee’s lumber schedule 50 to 28.

McCumber Fights For Lower Duty On Lumber
In Washington on June 23 Senator McCumber proposed an amendment reducing planed lumber differentials by 23 1 2 percent and revising sawed lumber duty to 1.25 per thousand feet. Aldrich cited a Vermont mill owner’s letter showing higher charges for four sided planing. The amendment was rejected 30 to 49, and the main proposal setting sawed lumber duty at 1.50 with finished lumber differentials passed 50 to 28 as other wood duties were adjusted.
