Treasury Scandal Over bank deposits of public funds
On July third 1899 New York city sold old custom house property to National City Bank and Standard Oil for 1.5 million dollars. The sale proceeds were to be deposited in the treasury but were kept on deposit with the purchasing bank. Congressman Sulzer contrasts McKinley in 1888 with McKinley in 1900, criticizing government deposits in national banks and noting over a hundred million dollars of the people’s money held by banks without interest.
