Black Butte Mine to Undergo Plant Upgrades
The Black Butte quicsilver mine, sixteen miles south of Cottage Grove, will close Saturday for plant improvements. A second furnace with a 1 million ton daily capacity is planned, boosting output from 40 to 50 tons per day, with temporary shutdown during work. Superintendent W B Dennis says development has been steady and the upgrade will justify further investment. Dennis also negotiated a bond for Elm Head quicsilver mine in Douglas County, aimed at developing the new property with plans mirroring Black Butte’s modernization. The Elm Head mine, owned by the Pacific Company and linked to Hovey estate, Abram, and Wonders, shows ore in sight and potential in line with sister mine Black Butte.
