The narrative follows Bucks and Callahan amid rail yard tensions at Benkleton. A dangerous gang of Little Russia rail workers and a clash over depot operations heighten risk as characters plan, drink, and scheme through a tense shift.
In Benkleton the east and west section men face a violent gang of cowboys who sabotage lamps and switches. Bucks hires Shockley, a wary former Chicago switchman with a violent past, to restore order. Shockley wins respect, pacifies the yard, and saves Chris Oxen from a deadly switch accident, sacrificing danger to protect workers and secure Little Russia’s control.
