LaPorte Indiana February 10 Sheriff Antiss wired from Everett Washington that Sophia Hopkins living in Fling is not Mrs. Belle Gunness. Detectives had claimed a match but authorities found little resemblance to the LaPorte woman known locally.
In Washington on Feb 16 a subcommittee of the senate committee on public lands will hear administration bills for conserving pastoral lands. The panel includes Senator Amoot as chairman with Clark of Wyoming Dixon Chamberlain and Hughes. W A Hogate bought 27 acres along New River near Cottage Grove for 1000 dollars, near the new Kow River wagon road and the future bridge, with hardwood timber and land suitable for gardening and potato raising.
Tokio Feb 16. The announcement that the United States would grant the minimum tariff rates to Japan was received with lively satisfaction by commercial interests here.

Northern Texas Iowa Kansas and Oklahoma experience sharp temperature drops and sleet.
Senator B R Tillman of South Carolina was suddenly taken ill on the capitol steps and rushed to his home under a physician care. Doctors attributed the episode to a recurrence of his old trouble or arteriosclerosis, while the physician deemed the attack not serious. A separate note reports a burglar breaking into a butcher shop and stealing 50 cents without taking any meat.
Butte Montana February 16 The walkout by a majority of hoisting engineers threatens a district wide mine shutdown as owners fail to concede on jurisdictional disputes. Only four Amalgamated Company mines continue operations with about six hundred workers this morning, and the next shift may see fewer men.
Miss Agnes Elkins, niece of U S Senator Elkins, shot herself in a Kansas City hotel room. The bullet passed below the heart. doctors say she may recover. A note on the dressing table read I am tired of life I have no home or friends.
In Kansas City on February 16, Miss Elkins aged 25, whose mother died a year ago, left for New York to seek an engagement on the stage despite relatives’ opposition. Senator Elkins urged a visit to Elkins West Virginia but failed to sway her resolve. She has returned to press a $25,000 damage suit against the Metropolitan.
