NEW ASSAY OUTFIT FOR UNIVERSITY MINING DEPT
The University of mining engineering recently expanded its assay department with a Union Iron Works rock crusher and grinder driven by a two horsepower electric motor. A number of hand crushers and pulverizers support sample preparation, and furnaces with a capacity of about 20 complete assays per day run on gasoline from two 15 gallon tanks. The department owns three first class assay balances, one capable of weighing five cents worth of gold to the tow of ore. The unit is for instructional use only, not for commercial work, though some problems in smelting and metallurgy may be demonstrated for educational purposes.
