Morales Reported A Prisoner In Santo Domingo Fight

Washington reports that Dopugnue under Lt Cmdr Zechteller arrived at Puerto Plata to preserve order as factions clash in Santo Domingo. Morales and followers press opposition to the cabinet while troops pursue magistrates and a battle near Santo Domingo injures officials. General Deschamps prepares to operate against Puerto Plata. Kingston says Morales is a prisoner in the capital.

Insurance Investigation Witness From New York Life

John J. Meck, secretary of New York Life, testified in an insurance inquiry this morning. He and Hamilton and Paris were described as in serious condition following an alleged incident in Paris. Meck said Hamilton refused to surrender checks or checkbooks tied to private matters.

Failure at San Francisco hits Pacific Trail and Stock Exchange

San Francisco, Dec. 27. The Pacific Trail and Stock Exchange suspended business this morning. Operated by William and John O'Brien, formerly telegraph operators, tied to E. C. Hetzel & Company. Losses estimated as high as 276,000 with 255,000 lost in the last three weeks in a dispute between Lawson and the Standard Oil, blamed for the failure.

Saloons Open on Sunday in Pendleton

Pendleton Oregon reports saloons opened for business on Sunday and Christmas for the first time since last summer. The prior grand jury recommended city officials address the issue, with complaints to be referred to a grand jury or January court term.

Market Flurry Drives Rates Down and Assassination Report

New York markets surged in a late day flurry with money at percent and call money peaking at six percent the highest since 1901. At two o'clock rumors said the czar was assassinated though Washington verification was not received. Improvement Club Formed in East Eugene

At a meeting of taxpayers in East Eugene the Improvement Club formed with L Phettyplace as temporary chairman and Geo M Miller as temporary secretary. A constitution committee was named and a December 20 meeting set. Members discussed the January 24 bond issue to fund municipal ownership of water and electric plants and adopted resolutions favoring city ownership through bonds to the lowest bidder and planning another citizen meeting.

Gold From Blue River Mining Party Returns Home

W. W. and Elbert Robe E. V. Mad dox and George Bonney owners of the Sverlaeting Jack mine on the Cal apoola side of the Rice River mining district spent the holidays at home. They brought a pack of gold and praised a two-stage prospect mill for their ore. After holidays they will return to the mine and push a south tunnel, aiming to deepen the ore body and install a catishle mill on the property.

In Salem the Halem-Portland electric railroad grading advances and expected to ready the Chemawa segment for ties and ballast by January. Washington December 27 The ecological survey reports that electric steel production in Oregon rivaling Germany is possible with pig iron from Pagule Tesesh and other sources. Dr Day’s preliminary findings describe two furnaces testing magnetite near Hammond station and ore from Aptos California yielding high quality steel at high temperatures, comparable to the best blast furnaces.

Drain Oregon December 27 The strongest sign of an early start on the Dragon Western branch to Marshfield Coos Bay harbor is the unloading prep for 90 cars of steel. Foreman Charles Davis and 40 Japanese workers level ground and lay a solid bed of ties to receive the freight for the new track. Only enough steel is loaded here for five or six miles of track with later consignments sent along the right of way as construction proceeds.

Italian shoots at Southern Pacific train near Medford

A man linked to an Italian gang employed by the Southern Pacific railroad fired a shot through an observation car of train No 1d near the Medford station. The ball passed through the glass above passengers heads. Sheriff Rader ordered the arrest of the entire gang involved, amid Christmas revelry and heavy drinking.

Dynamite attack on Justice of the Peace in Baldwin

In Caldes, a dynamite blast damaged the rear of Justice Baldwin’s residence late at night. Investigators say the explosion, heard citywide, tore a hole in the ground and shattered a table. Baldevila narrowly escaped serious injury from the incident, which authorities suspect was tied to a personal grudge against the official.
