Efforts to peacefully settle the dispute between Chicago street car companies and their employees were renewed today with renewed vigor as negotiations continued to avert a strike. The talks centered on terms affecting wages and working conditions, with both sides expressing hope for a prompt agreement.
Viewwood Springs Colo Aug 16 A cloudburst washed a rancher’s daughter Mit Gustafson from a Gypsum area ranch while a man applying for work attempted a rescue. He was carried away and later found unconscious a mile downstream. The Peaver & Rio Grande line remains blocked by the flood.

Annapolis August 11 Today's Sutton court of Inquiry heard undertaker P R Taylor and burial preparer Jas N Weiderfield say there was no evidence Sutton's arms were broken and no indications of beating. Professor Gilbert Coleman of the Naval Academy testified Sutton was sober from lunch until midnight October 12 1907 with Miss May Stewart of Pittsburgh. A. P. Hoey, Harriman's chief civil engineer, arrived in Bocene to oversee the Natron to Klamath Falls extension. He travels to Natron to survey the route for Utah Construction Co. The projected line from Natron to Klamath Falls could take a little over two years, with heavy work ahead including the longest tunnel on the line.
Chicago Aug 11 Johnson signed articles to fight James Jeffries for the world heavyweight title. The bout will occur within eight months at the club offering best inducements. All bids must be in within sixty days. The men will box from twenty to one hundred rounds.

In Middletown New York Monticello main street fire destroyed 36 buildings including hotels stores and homes with losses around 1 million dollars. Dynamite used to control fire as investigators probe origin. Also Spokane fire wiped out Brewster business district causing about 50 thousand dollars in damage with insured portion. In Sacramento the burned body of Carrie Bresian was found. police arrest James Cook on suspicion of murder and arson amid quarrel from the prior evening.
The largest class of applicants for teachers certificates in the county history undergoes examinations at the high school. County Superintendent W B Dillard leads the effort assisted by Professor L R Alderman and W G Martin. The class numbers 116 with 101 seeking county certificates.
John M. Farley, born in Ireland in 1842, became the fourth Roman Catholic Archbishop of New York. He was ordained in Rome in 1870 and succeeded Archbishop Corrigan in 1902, guiding the see through early 20th century events.
