Hops Soaring High as Hop Growers See Strong Prices
James Winstanley, secretary of the Oregon Hop Growers Association, reports encouragement for the 1903 hop crop. A New York letter says prices from 50 to 35 cents per pound are offered, with Oregon buyers likely to bid around 25 cents on contracts. Earlier 1901 sales in New York reached 26 cents. Weather in the Willamette valley remains favorable for growth, though extended heat may slightly reduce yield while improving quality. Winstanley notes lice are being killed by heat and advocates thorough spraying as a value to secure high prices, stressing the need for timely investment to protect the crop.
