In California, escaped Folsom penitentiary convicts are trapped in Greenwood Creek bottom ten miles from Pilot Hill after a canyon clash with Sheriff Hosquitt and Keenan’s posse. Fifty shots fired as reinforcements and militia are awaited this afternoon. Also, Portland Councilman Sharkey calls for a full police force investigation amid graft accusations.
The Oregon City general government project to buy the present locks or build new ones will be revived. The Oregon delegation in Washington will push the issue and Federal engineers will review the matter. Nearby, Portland faces a flood of counterfeit money circulars linked to a New York address.
Members of the Typographical Union in Spokane return to work on the Spokesman-Review after President Lynch of the International Typographical Union at Indianapolis issued directives. Cowles, owner of the papers, conceded at a conference in Indianapolis ending the dispute.
Paisley correspondent reports Francis G. Burke of Minneapolis examined Oregon terrain for a potential railroad from Salt Lake to the Pacific coast near Eugene. Burke predicts $10,000 paid by Clark to Union Pacific could fund a line through this region, outlining a route via Stein’s Mountain, Lake County, Chewanacan Valley to Paisley and a Cascade pass to Willamette headwaters. He plans to travel to San Francisco then New York.
Justice of the Peace Evans and M Kline, noted locals, are jailed in Sumpter after a Twenty-one game manipulation. They allegedly forced Pearson to cash counterfeit or disputed checks, beat him when he tried to stop payment, and fled with about the money. Pearson sought bank help as the men stood nearby.
The Woodmen of the World and the Knight of Pythias baseball game scheduled for tomorrow afternoon is indefinitely postponed due to the death of Chas Griffin, a Knights member. It is unlikely the teams will play this year.
A special council meeting settled the timing for repaying 15,000 sewer bonds. Payments of 1000 are due every three years in 1906 1909 1015 and 1918, with bids for the bonds to be advertised and received by 7 p.m. September 28 1903 in today's Guard.
J T Rowland and his party returned this afternoon from a camping trip. Rowland suffered a severe kick resulting in a broken arm during the trip. The arm is improving rapidly and is said to be in better condition than before the injury.
The Rev. BR. T. Croes of York, Nebraska, has accepted a call to the Congregational church and is expected in town this week to begin his pastorate next Sunday, August 2.
Co L Pitchard bought the Thorne hops stock today for his company and took charge of the tale set consigning them to the East.
John P. Jones traveling passenger agent of the Southern Pacific Company and John H. Pearson general manager of the Bohemia railroad discussed a Sunday excursion plan. Depart early Sunday from Eugene to the Bohemia line terminus for a day in the mountains, returning by night. A very low round trip rate would be offered if business covers expenses, with strong potential patronage from Eugene residents attracted by scenic travel.
The Daily Guard reports baseball directors learned Roseburg refused to play Eugene in Eugene next weekend. A Salem game might be held instead to settle the schedule. If moved, Eugene would receive half of the gate receipts, a likely larger total in Salem due to league rivalry. Directors postponed a final decision.
A Parker resigns from Washborne and Son of Springfield flour mills and will move to Eastern Oregon and Washington. J A Humphrey returns to run one of Springfield's key industries guiding Snow Ball Flour back to old time excellence. Andy Taylor buys the barber shop at No West Eight Street in Lane County Bank building and plans interior improvements.
Federal suits seek return of 480 acres granted through fraudulent affidavits before United States Commissioner Marie L Ware at Eugene. Defendants G B McLeod William H H Watkins James B Warwick and Samuel L Carson cited to appear September 7. Fraud claims allege Watkins Warwick Carson were fictitious locals used to obtain lands later owned by McLeod.
An inebriated man approached the U.S. mail box at Magnes and Matson's store last evening. He dropped a nickel into the letter trap, then tried again and peered into the slot. A passerby heckled him from across the street, causing him to stop the attempt.
Grant's Pass, July 2. The deer open season brought a fatal incident in Curry County mountains. Dr. Cooper of Cheteo Oregon, a well known local, was shot by a young man from Oakland California. The bullet pierced the abdomen, fractured the spine, and he died within hours.
Nightwatch George Croner plans a five day vacation to Belknap Springs in McKenzie territory. He leaves at four a.m. with about two thousand pounds of supplies to keep the resort running during his absence. Milt McMurray will manage repairs and oversee campers while Croner rests and recuperates.
Archie Livermore announces four civil service exams in Eugene for state jobs. Positions include Pharmacist, Computer, Entomological Draughtsman, and Testing Engineer with salaries from 860 to 1200 per year. Exams held August 26 and September 2 and 23. Application blanks available at the local post office.
W E Coman of the Southern Pacific in Eugene says Sunday excursions to Yaquina Bay have been decided on by the company. Announcement of start date soon with trains leaving Eugene in the morning for a full beach day. Public expect strong patronage.
Dr C E Loomis plans to reopen his practice in Eugene starting next month. A Chicago trained specialist in eye ear nose and throat he is expected to quickly build a substantial patient base. The office will be in Preston and Hales building.
