Eugene Flour Mill Complains of Rates

J M Shelley of Eugene manager of the Eugene Mill and Elevator Company protests to the state railroad commission against a near 100 percent rise in local freight rates. He cites a 23 cent rate per 100 pounds for wheat and oats from Eugene to Yoncalla 44 miles, versus 14 cents before 1907, and a Eugene to Roseburg rate of 31 cents vs 15 cents. The commission will investigate.

Coal Vein Found Near Spencer Butte Mine

The Spencer Butte Coal and Petroleum Company reports a coal vein encountered southwest of the city at about the depth reached by the drill. The vein is of good depth and the coal surface samples are of fair quality. Officers and stockholders celebrate and push development with new machinery ordered from a Portland firm. A larger body of harder coal is expected soon, signaling promising prospects for Eugene and vicinity. R. W. Veatch and family visited from Cottage Grove and plan to move to Eugene.
