Railroad Rate Hearing At Salem
In Salem April 22 lumbermen hailed the railroad commission hearing as productive for appealing to the Interstate Commerce Commission to seek relief. Railroad officials called the session barren, arguing no reason to revert from the $6 rate and no evidence justifying a return to $3.10 per thousand. The commission holds facts from both sides but will delay action until thorough weighing of data. Meanwhile lower valley millmen propose a 3 cent per hundred rate to Portland or tidewater to capitalize water competition to San Francisco Bay, a proposal railroads are considering.
