An annual Patriotic Meeting addressed by Geo. A Bell discusses the Canadian Patriotic Fund and its aims. The event highlights community support and national service during a period of national fundraising efforts.
At Estevan town hall the annual Estevan Patriotic Fund meeting heard Hon. George Hell defend wartime finances and oppose tax funding as sole support. He urged voluntary giving as the duty of Canadians, warning slackers who fail to help risk later regret and urging rural and urban balance in contributions.
Mr J G Moffat of Sask Coal Brick and Power Ltd clarifies he did not come as a delegation to press Briquette proposal. He says he was invited by the town council to attend and present information, but found no board members present and did not act as an appointed representative.
An Austrian migrant, Koshey, appeared before Magistrate Duncan in Estevan on charges arising from a contract to work at Wexelman’s farm for four months at 60 dollars monthly. He was fined five dollars and costs for breach and 350 dollars plus costs for vagrancy, totaling 74.70 dollars. The case, prosecuted by Corporal McRae, relied on interpreter testimony with no defence offered.
Elizabeth Ann Galloway aged 11 died after a week long illness. The community mourns a girl held in high esteem for faith and character. Funeral was held Monday from the farm residence and a large congregation attended the Methodist service led by Rev. J. W. Aikin.
The Rev W P Anderson and Mrs Anderson depart Estevan on Wednesday for Assiniboia to resume ministry. A former Baptist preacher famed for oratory, Anderson last spoke publicly in Estevan at the 1914 Burns dinner. He came west from New Brunswick 17 years ago and homesteaded near Estevan before moving to Hillside.

He favors locating the plant to serve all interests and suggests forming a dedicated company controlled by mine owners if the government operates it for one year and proves successful.
Salesmen from Prairie Nurseries Ltd were entertained in the Oddfellows hall by Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Torgeson. Fifty four attendees included Estevan residents, their wives, directors, and staff. Cards, lunch, short speeches by Mr. Gilbart and Mr. Hilborn, and prize winnings marked the evening.
Pte. Arthur Vance, formerly of the 142nd, returned home Monday evening badly wounded from Vimy Ridge last April. He suffered severe internal injuries and was operated on in English hospitals. A stretcher bearer was killed during his evacuation. His wife and children, who had gone to England, are expected to return. He will receive further treatment at Military Hospitals Commission and RSA trials. Mrs. Creighton of Saskatown visited her son Dr. J. Creighton.
Judge Wylie lauded Alfred Lord Tennyson as a mental and physical giant and praised his poetic genius. The talk covered his early life, critics, seclusion, eventual popularity, and the pension and peerage honor. Mrs. Stuart noted his poems and the judge discussed his marriage and influence on English poetry. Next Sunday features a debate with three speakers.
Mrs Lackey died visiting friends in Weyburn last week after previously living in Hill Hall Estevan and Fleming. She is survived by her husband and sons Victor and Janes, with Harold killed in France. Funeral held at St Matthew's with Rev John Swalwell leading. pallbearers included Forrest Perry McNaught Yardley Irvine Rooney. Masons attended in respect. Kate Johnson played Dead March in Saul.
A Regina Department of Agriculture speaker urged higher production and labor organization. The committee includes Mayor Milne and eight others with Rev. W J McIvor as secretary. A later meeting will organize labor for harvesting and threshing to prevent crop loss.
Mr and Mrs Jack Mitchell and family express gratitude to friends and neighbors for their kindness and assistance during the bereavement of their only son.
The Dominion Lands Office in Souris will shut as the Union Government cuts costs and ends Homestead Regulations ads. Agent John Templeman will move with his family to Swift Current to assume duties, ending seven years of service and seven years of residence. The Canadian Patriotic Fund duties and secretary roles end with his departure. A luncheon follows the Souris train arrival at the Clarendon hotel.
