It was laid out by R. J. Davis, on the southwest quarter of section 21 and many additions have been laid out since, eight as early as 18B1, two by O. D. Wood, one by S. R. Benson, one by a Mr. Rambo, one by John O. Irvin and three by R. J. Davis.A postoffice was established here m I860 and some of the early postmasters who served were: Farwell Barnes, J. Q, Adams, D. W. Walker, J. H. Ingalls, E, L. Wood, Mary E. Wood, George Lepley, J. C. Haase, O. E. Wood.The first to engage In business was John Snively, a Pennsylvanian who in 1869 established a general store. He remained a few years. Then followed Boyer and Robinson. The third merchant was E. L. Lyon, who later became a banker at Marshalltown. Then came Barnes who also had a grain warehouse ast did S. F. Benson,Union wn incorporated as a town on Oet. 27,1874. The first municipal officers were J. W.Lawrence, mayor; J. A^Ingallit tenure]clerk; J. L. Barnes, .... The first council waa made up as follows: J. A. Boyer, William Bates, O. D. Wood, F. Barnes, S. J. ArnettAn ordinance providing for a waterworks System was passed in May, 1896, under which a bonded indebtedness could be had and was secured for the construction of waterworks, costing $4,-000. A wooden tank was made which served until about 1908, when a steel tank was erected.Area Settled; Haggin Came in 1849Union township is that smb-di-f vision of Hardin county to whichbelongs the distinction of having first been entered for actual set-KER8EY G. It was Greenberry Hag-gin, a genuine pioneer character, who preferred the outskirts of civilization rather than the more throughly developed sections of country in which to abide.He loved the wild prairie, its tall grass, its nodding wild flowers its game and its meandering streamlets and timber-skirted streams. He entered this fair un-touche^ domain in 4849, with his family and buflt a rude log cabin on Section 23. He had several sons, all of whom took claims on sections 20, 14 and 23.rams, for the election of county officers.The first postoffice in Union township was established in 1855, with Thomas N. Hauser as postmaster, the office being held in his house, the name being Union Postoffice. Mr. Hauser held the office about five years and resigned. After that it was kept by different men and moved to various places within Union township, having no regular abiding place until 1869, when it was located permanently at the town of Union—Past and Present of Hardin County” published In 1911.SuPreA home stock company in 1909 ut in one of the best electric-ighting plants in this section of Iowa, but it was later purchased by the Central States Electric Co.—From Past and Present of Hardin County” published In 1911.These drummer boys were doing their stuff at Union in 1885. Sharp uniforms topped with the lettering “CJ.D.C.” (Union Junior Drum Corps) on threaps, the group was sponsored by Kersey post, G.A.R. Left to right, the boys are Lew Brown, Walter Humeston, Lynn Wood, Harry Dillon, id Corfe, Ed Lundy, Herb Lawrence, Charlie Lawrence, Will Wood.In 1650 to Union township came James Austin Dawdy, William Robeson, Samuel Smith, sr., with his two sons, Alexander and Samuel Smith, jr., all from Knox county, 111. Jacob Miller and a Mr. Grimsley and Thomas Hauser came the same year. William Robeson located on section 14, removed several times, but finally died on this section.
