Early Oregon Overland Routes Paved by Scott Applegate and Barlow

A fragment recounts the 1840s to 1850s pioneer roads into Oregon. Levi Scott Jess Applegate and Samuel Barrow opened passes through the Cascades, creating the Scott Applegate trail and southern emigrant road. The 1845 pass led emigrants to Oregon City, with further improvements funded by 1846 and 1859 appropriations. Routes from Portland to Willamette valleys, ferry crossings, and early inland mail lines followed, culminating before railroads reshaped travel.
