Knotty attendance question at fair prompts old era debate
A report discusses the crowd size at a fair, suggesting it was under 4,400,000 with thousands arriving from abroad and Chicago residents staying weeks. It notes hospital care for over 18,000 in a month, and transport counts including 78,000,000 midway rides and 22,500,000 elevated trips, while the Midway is shut and officials cover banquet costs. The Ferris Wheel earned about 902,000 and profits of Hagenbeck’s show near 295,000. Cairo Street ledger lists 800,000 with 200,000 declared. Several notable names linked to the oath record and figures appear.
