Schuman and Naville families in New Albany and Lafayette township are poised to inherit 3 million marks from Maj. Herman Frederick, a retired Austrian officer whose death left an estate transferred to the government. A Cincinnati attorney began the claim six years ago, his son continuing after the elder’s death, and the claim has now been allowed.
Wickliffe notes Rev. McKiney conducted his usual Sunday service at the U B church. Bishop Neegan of Tennessee spoke Saturday night at the U B Church in honor of Central Indiana University and conducted as a summer field agent. Several youths attended Union church Saturday. John Weidman returned from the Insane Asylum where he had been employed. Lizzie Eckerty visited her sister near Eckerty Sunday. Jacob Leusor and wife visited their daughter Mrs Geo Dee Sunday. Elvert Care and wife spent Sunday with Pearl Gass and wife.
A 1910 letter from Clayton New Mexico promotes affordable homesteads near Clayton Union County. It describes fertile plains, abundant water, coal fields, growing markets in Trinidad Pueblo and Denver, and a thriving town with schools and services. It touts 160 acre farms for 16 dollars and 236 acres for 22 dollars, with real estate firms Fennington Forbes handling sales. The note also mentions local marriage announcements and engagements from nearby English Indiana.
English beat Birdseye 12 to 2 at the local diamond in Sunday debut of 1910. Hammond batted and Ellsworth pitched for a one sided game as a large crowd watched the season start led by the M W of A band. Marengo looms next Sunday.
The fourteenth Indiana district convention at the Christian Church in this place April 28–29 drew about 115 delegates. Rev. R N Simpson opened and closed with an address for the Y P S C E. Missions and Bible School sessions featured speakers like W B Cummins Fred Goss M C Hushes T J Legg and Grant K Lewis. The church was refurbished for the event and next year’s meeting will be in Jeffersonville.
Numerous residents including John A Weathers Sam Taylor James M Dean and families traveled to English for business while others visited Louisville New Albany Corydon and Mount Olive. A Christian church convention in English and a Washington City birth are also noted along with plans for a reunion August 10 to 13.
John Essary of Alton visited the family of Willis Lankford last week. Miss Mable Boyd has been visiting her Aunt Mrs. Willard Sharp for three weeks. Regular church services were held at the Methodist and Christian churches on Sunday. Ott Humphery’s four week meeting at West Fork ended Sunday night with a birthday dinner for him and a large afternoon gathering. Wattie Wright of Grantsburg conducted local enumeration. A heavy rain and hail storm occurred Monday night.
The Marengo fire destroyed about sixteen houses in the business district starting in C D Summers livery stable. Heaviest losses include G S Balthis and Son store and stock valued at 15000, Summers drug store and livery, and several insured and uninsured businesses totaling around 30000 with about 6000 in insurance. Firefighters saved the bank and telephone exchange. plans for rebuilding in concrete are mentioned.
Luther Temple paid taxes in English Friday. A B Henry and W B Cates were in Marengo Monday. Etta Wiser of Wyandotte visited relatives here and in Leavenworth. Lina Riley of Marengo returned home Monday. Vick Everdon visited Marengo Monday. A large portion of local youths attended the high school commencement at Leavenworth Thursday. Miss Eural Henry has gone to Richmond to work in the Insane Asylum. Mr and Mrs Bottenfield of Milltown attended the Sunday School Convention here. Miss Irene Everdon left Monday for Indianapolis for an Insane Asylum position. J F House sold 40 acres to Sel Wiser and W B Cates sold 70 acres to J F House. Chas Miller and wife, after visiting several days, returned to New Albany Thursday.
