A Boone township column recalls seven men serving in Camp Taylor with a service flag listing Andrew J. Goodman Jr and six others. The piece covers community events from sickness and school enrollment to shopping trips, livestock shipments, and notices of deaths including Robert Kemp due to heart trouble after a buggy accident.
A clock of local notices lists residents from Riddle to Taswell and beyond who were in English on various days. Names include Albert Neal Arthur Atkins Joseph Allen Mrs Nash Guy Hollan Land Davies Denbo Sams Hedden Jackson Walls Scott Stroud Myler and many others with trips to Indianapolis Louisville Owensville New Albany and Leavenworth. Community life centers on visits, calls, and subscriptions with posts from May and June.
G L Smith died at his Indianapolis home Tuesday afternoon after a brief pneumonia illness. A native of Crawford county, he taught in English schools, later built homes near Temple, and moved to Indianapolis. Survived by widow Clara, four children, four brothers, two sisters, with interment at Sloan Cemetery after a Wednesday arrival.
George W. Eastridge of English Indiana advertises for sale registered Poland China pigs of either sex.
Mr and Mrs Albert Nash hosted a Saturday evening in honor of Charles Smith and Charles Simcox who depart for Camp Taylor Ky. The house overflowed with flags and flowers as music and games followed by refreshments. Friends hope for their safe return.
G W Newton teacher in Johnson township’s Cottier school turned in a Red Cross fund collection from pupils in Saylish. Donations listed include Arthur Brown $2.16, Gold e Knight $1.90, Hazel Gilmore $1.10, Aden Smith 60 cents, Willie and Russell Miller 4 dollars.
Besides twenty seven men who left for Camp Zachary Taylor Monday the list includes Chester Bay East of Alton sent with them. Ivan Noblitt and J B Funk left Saturday for Pur due for special work, Herman E Collins of Tower Guy C Rainforth of Fredonia and Fred S Frans of Leavenworth will go to Ft Thomas Ky Saturday. Nathan R Hollen of Teswell and Edgar R White of Marengo will go next Tuesday to Ft Benjamin Harrison. Edgar Longest of English and Wallace Alderson of Marengo volunteered as painters awaiting call.
A wagon incident on the ridge left Mrs. W Q Ballard with minor injuries and her daughter unharmed after a team of horses bolted and ran a mile before turning into a lane. A Service Flag with eleven stars was raised in Ohio township to honor local servicemen.
The upper end of Ohio township held a Liberty Loan Holiday at the U B church in Riddle under the Woman's Liberty Loan Organization. A program of songs speeches and declamations entertained an engaged crowd. The Liberty Guard led by Captain Byrd paraded and the Service Flag was raised with stars honoring local fallen and enlisted heroes. The community expressed strong patriotism with frequent drills and public support for the war effort.
Alson Roberts notes several large monuments were purchased before a price rise and are now available for Decoration delivery at a bargain.
Marengo notices report many visits and social calls across nearby towns including New Albany Corydon and Milltown. A death tolls the community as Mrs W F Taylor wife of Rev W F Taylor dies after a series of heart issues and service members are referenced as in the army.
