Armenian baritone Torcom Bezazian will be a major musical draw at Chautauqua appearing on the third day with Vitale and his Band. He will sing many celebrated solos both afternoon and evening with band accompaniment and perform selections from his popular phonograph records.
A wide list of local residents and visitors traveled to and from English and nearby towns over the past week. Names include Earl Roberts, Mrs S J Elsby, Wm Ballard, Lois A Brown, Bloomer Enlow, Dr H H Deen, H W Key, S A Neal, Charles Myler, G M Byrd, W W Jones, Dorsey P Marting, Mr and Mrs C A Pope, E E Parr, Nah Benham, Steve Jones, A H Brown, Deila Byrd, Henry McClanahan, George Roberson, James B Ferguson, Percy L Davie, John Will Brown, Irene Ashby, Romance Finch, Fay Crewa, J F Gobbel, Comal, James R Sloan, David Hedden, Dow Hedden, and Nathan Hendrix.
A local American Red Cross chapter has been formed in English with officers Henry W. Mock chairing, Miss Lou Thornbury vice chair, Mrs. George Dalrymple secretary and IL. A. Helmbrecht treasurer. Membership is one dollar annually with funds split between local supplies and hospital needs. The room at Funk & Spencer’s former store will serve as headquarters and a sewing workroom. About two hundred members are enrolled, inviting all residents to join and contribute.
A Friday evening lawn party at Mrs. Sarah Sloan’s residence featured games and late refreshments of cake and lemonade. A long list of attendees included Rev. and Mrs. George Dalrymple and numerous local youths and couples.
Jack Callahan and Misses Opal and Pearl Mathers hosted guests at their home Wednesday night in honor of Miss Carla Foreman of Princeton. Social games and music followed by ice cream. attendees included Lola Standiford, Mabelle Jones, Mabelle McMahel, Myrtis Bird, Wm Boyd, and Rossen Funk.
A local item notes Webster s New International Dictionary offered cheaply at The News office. Also reports a Monday birthday party at Mr. and Mrs. Lyndon Roberts home in Ethel with music games and refreshments. Several residents are listed visiting relatives and traveling for events and exams.
A child of Prof. and Mrs. Charles Deich was hurt Thursday afternoon while a hay fork pulled rope through a pulley. He received wounds, was treated by Dr. Gobbel, and was reported doing well at the Starr home in Patoka.
Harrison Sarles attended Monday Mics in English while Ivan Hubbard visited in New Albany at Robert Hubbard’s home. Ed Scott returned from Vincennes. Archie Sarles left for Jeffersonville for work. family to follow. Zora and Jocie Shields shopped in English, Belvin Wright hosted Bryan Cunningham, and Charles Turley and Charles Landiss visited English. Burnett boys beat Magnolia 13 to 5 in a Sunday ball game. Church service scheduled at No 10 next Sunday July 22. all invited.
Mary Florence Brown Lutz of the community died July 14, 1917 after cancer treatment failed following surgery in Louisville and St. Louis. She was 36 years old, wife of Charles E. Lutz, mother of Oma Ethel and Ora Edward, with surviving siblings Ida, Ellen, Yollie, George W., and Mack. Funeral and burial were at Riddle cemetery.
Rainy week covers social visits and church activities. Regular appointment by Rev. George Dalrymple slated for Saturday evening. Residents such as Mrs. Sarah McDaniel of New Albany and J. W. Real attend events in Marengo and Eckerty. Several locals travel to Burkharts for church, a ball game attends, and many kin visit relatives across towns including Terre Haute and Jeffersonville. Twins born to S. F. Lambdin. Arch Sarles travels to Jeffersonville for a guarding position.
Edward Elliott will present The Lion and the Mouse by Charles Klein this summer at the Chautauqua. The production, notable for its long Broadway run, is a dramatic American tale with Elliott performing without wigs, props, or costumes after twenty five years on the platform.
The Economic Club will meet at Mrs H W Mack's on Wednesday July 25. Roll call features Short Irish Stories and papers on Bacteria including where found and factors affecting growth. Presenters include Mrs Joel Mellon Mrs Leonard Cummins and Miss Cora Peabody with a discussion on business training for homemakers. Current events by Mrs Robert P Hilands.
James E. Stewart, a real estate agent, advertises two farms for sale near Temple. One farm is sixty five acres and the other eighty acres.
Local residents and relatives are recorded visiting and traveling this week. Names include Geo Richardson from Biilett and Claud Stewart from Louisville visiting relatives, with trips to Detroit Louisville New Albany Wickliffe Princeton and Indianapolis for family events, funerals, and sick list updates.
