The Democratic convention completed its ticket with A. E. Stevenson of Illinois chosen on the first ballot amid a dramatic contest among Stevenson Towne Hill and others. A popular ovation greeted Hill, while Tennessee shifted its 24 votes to Stevenson triggering the unopposed nomination and widespread celebration.
The convention surged with energy as Alabama yielded to Minnesota to nominate Charles A. Towne for vice president while David Bennett Hill faced a dramatic moment of resistance. South Bend police arrest landlord J W Morrison on a warrant charging murder and arson in the Morrison hotel fire that killed John S Johnson and two others. Johnson, Louis Smart, and Edward Smith were among the dead. six others injured. Morrison, about 55, held at central station. In Mishawaka, John J Reed, son of farmer David Reed, was slain in Seattle for his money. his body to be shipped to Indiana.
Miss Daisy Hale lies dying from swallowed poison in Muncie Indiana after losing an eye and refusing pain relief. She left a note to her sweetheart before taking the poison and awaits death as officials note her intent. Cyrus Laughlin four year old son of Homer Laughlin glass worker burned to death in a locked straw-filled camp structure as flames trap him.
Bedford Indiana July 9 Sheriff DobBins and Deputy Sheriff Meckstone arrested Oliver Thomasson at his Marion township home then transported him through Orleans to the Jeffersonville reformatory for safe keeping. Thomasson about 25 years old is believed tied to the Frank Lantz murder.
Garrett Indiana July 9 Harry Smith a prominent carpenter and contractor was found dead in bed by his wife who had prepared breakfast. Authorities believe death resulted from smothering as his head was buried in a pillow with him retiring in good health.
A disastrous windstorm hit Bedford Indiana on July 9. Several buildings were blown down or severely damaged and a family narrowly escaped when a tree blew onto their house. Crops and fruit suffered heavy losses in the county.
Ed Mooney of W. W. Mooney & Sons tanners and American Starch Works was thrown from a buggy in Columbus and died shortly after the wreck. He was a noted local business figure with ties to two firms in the city.
New Albany July 9. Manager George H. Godfrey of the Western Union telegraph office here enters his fortieth consecutive year as manager. He says his record likely has no equal in the company.
Peter Freeland and Mrs. Elienor M. Young aged 84 and 79 were married in Furnessville, Valparaiso county. Each had been married twice before. The groom paid the license fee of two dollars in pennies.
A Shanghai dispatch says Japan plans to dispatch 23000 troops and 5000 horses to China while the German East Asiatic Squadron sails for China. Fighting rages at Tien-Tsin as Chinese forces resist. diversions include Prince Ching's troops arriving at Pekin to aid European defenders. Brussels reports China’s newspapers claim the defense remains resolute.
Yokohama reports the government orders 23,000 soldiers and 5,000 horses to China. Newspapers support the move but warn Japan bears blame if foreigners at Yekin perish. In Kiel the German East Asiatic squadron sailed for China with Emperor William and Prince Henry witnessing.
London reports on July 10 that Rear Admiral Bruce endorses rumors Prince Ching leads a counter revolution against Prince Tuan in Pekin. If Ching defends the legations with his army, foreigners may gain safety as Chinese factions divide, possibly drawing Li Hung Chang or Chang Chih Tung to aid. Provision support could spare the besieged legations.

Wabash Indiana reports John Hill a prominent farmer five miles southeast was accidentally killed Sunday afternoon when a shotgun he carried discharged while climbing a fence. Part of his skull was blown away in the incident.

Kansas City July 7 The Silver Republican National Convention adjourned without a vice presidential nomination after a heated debate. W J Bryan was named as the party's candidate for president, with Towne expected to be named for vice president if a ticket is completed. The action mirrors the Democratic convention changes.
John Martz fatally injured his younger brother Samuel in a gun dispute. He struck Samuel with a hatchet, splitting the skull. The brothers lived with their parents in Cincinnati and John Martz belonged to a militia company encamped at Middletown.
